When pistol shots rang out on the tragic day of March 31, 1995, the voice of the beautiful 23-year-old tejano singer Selena fell silent, but her popularity has lived on through her music. Hispanic communities throughout the world worshipped Selena for her singing and dynamic, charming personality. Selena was the first female superstar of tejano music (a Tex-Mex pop mixed from Mexican ranchera and American country), but she was much more. She was an icon and a role model for many young Mexican Americans.
