1982 North Carolina Flashback

Great players and great teams came together on January 9, 1982 on the home floor of the North Carolina Tar Heels. It was undefeated and number two ranked Virgina. The last time the teams met was in the national semifinal game with the Tar hells coming out on top. In that contest Virgina's 7-foot-4 center Ralph Sampson was held to just nine points. Sampson and the rest of the Cavaliers knew they had to do better to win in Chapel Hill. North Carolina's Sam Perkins and James Worthy were anxious to reprise their roles as giant slayers and the addition of precocious freshman "Mike" Jordan only strengthened coach Dean smith's team. Sampson gained some redemption with a game high 30 points and 19 rebounds, but the combination of Worthy (17 points, 9 rebounds), Jordan (16 points) and Perkins (12 points) was to much as North Carolina held on to the top spot with a 65 to 60 victory.
