"1966 NCAA Championship: Texas Western Vs. Kentucky": On March 19, 1966, Texas Western College, now known as the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP), put an all-black starting five on the floor for the first time in an NCAA basketball championship. That night the Texas Western Miners, led by coach Don Haskins with star players David Lattin and Bobby Joe Hill, defeated coach Adolph Rupp's #1 ranked all-white Kentucky Wildcats, 72-65. Lattin set the tone early with a thunderous dunk, highlighting the strength of the Miners, while Hill's back to back steals showed their quickness. Other key players for the Miners included Harry Flourney, Willie Cager, Willie Worsley and Nevil Shed. The Kentucky Wildcats featured Pat Riley, Louis Dampier and Larry Conley. "Glory Road": Josh Lucas ("Sweet Home Alabama") stars as future Hall of Fame coach Don Haskins of tiny Texas Western University, who bucks convention by simply starting the best players he can find: history's first all-African American lineup. In a turbulent time of social and political change, their unlikely success sends shock waves through the sport that follow the underdog Miners all the way to an epic showdown with all-white, #1 ranked Kentucky for the National Championship.
