1989 Fiesta Bowl National Championship

Irish Return To Glory With 11th National Title Coming into the 1989 Fiesta Bowl, Notre Dame coach Lou Holtz insisted that his team couldn't pass the ball against West Virginia. Irish quarterback Tony Rice, simply smiled and agreed. But by the end of the game he had outplayed Mountaineer quarterback Major Harris by completing 7-of-11 passes for 213 yards and two touchdowns. "For a guy who wasn't supposed to be able to throw, he looked all right to me," said West Virginia coach Don Nehlen. With Rice running and throwing to targets like freshman Raghib "Rocket" Ismail and flanker Ricky Watters, Notre Dame went on to win the game 34-21. The Fiesta Bowl victory gave the Irish their first national championship in 11 years and completed Notre Dame's return to the top of college football.
