Glittering Prizes (1976), The

"The Glittering Prizes" was a critical sensation when it premiered on PBS in the late 1970s. Frederic Raphael's tale portrays the hopes and frustrations of an entire generation through the story of a group of friends who meet at the prestigious Cambridge University in the 1950s. Tom Conti and Barbara Kellerman lead an outstanding ensemble cast in a series of six 80-minute episodes that follow the evolution of these privileged, idealistic college students through the turbulent 1960s and into the 1970s where their lives diverge and they struggle with emotional disillusionment and varying levels of worldly success. Episodes include: "An Early Life" - Jewish Adam Morris wins a scholarship to Cambridge University, where his assumptions about class and religious faith are tested., "A Love Life" - Second play is set in 1955, with the group of friends in their final year at Cambridge., "A Past Life" - Adam Morris publishes his first novel and decides to confront Stephen Taylor, who had been a supporter of British fascism in 1930's., "A Country Life" - Television interviewer Alan Parks and his wife visit their old Cambridge friends, Joyce and Dan, disrupting their lives., "An Academic Life" - Bill Bourne, returning from America to teach at a new university, is taunted by students for his outdated approach. and "A Double Life" - Adam Morris, a successful writer, is happily married with two children, but is not satisfied. He attempts to come to terms with his success by leading a double life.
