Andy Griffith Show, The

The first, and probably the best, of the rural-oriented comedies brought to TV, it starred Andy Griffith. Griffith played widower Andy Taylor, sheriff of Mayberry, North Carolina. Regulars included Don Knotts as his cousin Barney Fife, the zealous but inept deputy sheriff, six-year old Ronny Howard as Opie, Andy's son; Frances Bavier as Andy's aunt, Bee Taylor, who lived in and helped care for Opie. The townspeople included Jim Nabors as Gomer Pyle, gas pump jockey; Howard McNear as Floyd Lawson, the barber; Paul Hartman as Emmet Clark, a handyman,: Jack Dodson as Howard Sprague, the town clerk; Elinor Donahue as Elly Walker, drugstore salesclerk, Betty Lynn as Thelma Lou, Barney's girlfriend; Aneta Corsaut as schoolteacher Helen Crump, Andy's girlfriend; and Hal smith as Otis Campbell, the town drunk.
