First Amendment Project, The

Sundance Channel and Court TV present films from "The First Amendment Project," a highly innovative and wildly entertaining anthology of original films that challenges viewers to examine their understanding of civil liberties. Directed by acclaimed filmmakers, these films explore the various freedoms guaranteed by the First Amendment, including comedians Al Franken's hilarious battle against Fox News over trademark infringement. Includes "Fox Vs. Franken," Poetic License" and "Some Assembly Required." "Fox Vs. Franken" - the story behind Fox Television's legal efforts to halt publication of Al Franken's book "Lies And The Lying Liars Who Tell Them: A Fair And Balanced Look At The Right," will include a comic strip gallery as well as outtakes that didn't make it into the original telecast. The film mixes humor, beginning with Franken's comic account of his inspiration in writing the book, with its lucid account of the case's First Amendment underpinnings. Van Peebles' film "Poetic License" looks at famed writer and political activist Amiri Baraka, who was New Jersey's third Poet Laureate - and its last. Walter's "Some Assembly Required" follows a range of characters protesting at this past summer's Republican National Convention in New York City. "Some Assembly Required" is a Mr. Mudd production, with Lianne Halfon, John Malkovich and Russ Smith producing.
