From "Gramps Birthday", done with the original family in 1955 to "The Homecoming" a color feature done in Lassie's "Ranger" years in 1971. "Gramps Birthday": Jeff and Porky's efforts to keep the surprise party Ellen has planned for Gramps' birthday a secret, and to be especially nice to Gramps, result in a series of mishaps, with the kids constantly under-foot and doing the wrong things to help. They even intrude on Gramps when he is preparing to dynamite some tree stumps, and it is Lassie who narrowly averts tragedy for all. Gramps mistakenly gets the idea that today is Jeff's birthday and he hurriedly buys a gift. But the secret is kept, and the party is a big success! "Party Line": Ellen goes to Capitol City on an errand and suggests that Gramps take Jeff along. At the gas station, Gramps suddenly realized that he has left the corral gate open and phones Jenny, the town operator, to ask her to notify Ellen - but poor Jenny, harried by too many messages, does not follow through. It happens to be her birthday and the fact that no one has taken any notice of it only adds to her unhappiness. Lassie discovers her weeping and quickly brings Jeff. Plans are made to right the injustice and the day ends in a burst of joy and happiness for Jenny. "The Homecoming" (Presented in Color): At last, Lassie comes home after weeks of wandering.
