On a typical winter Sunday, Madeleine (Lisa Harrow), a struggling, middle-aged actress, wakes to her life in Queens like an exile. Her career is at an impasse; her marriage is ending; she is locked in a struggle with her estranged husband over their adopted daughter. Meanwhile, Oliver (David Suchet), an IBM technician recently laid off, has also awoken to an ongoing nightmare: to his horror, he is living in a homeless shelter. When Madeleine mistakes Oliver for a man she believes to be Matthew Delacorta, a famous film director, these two strangers are launched into a labyrinth of mystery, deception, romance and desire. As Madeleine and Oliver embark upon an intense and ultimately transforming day together, the enigmas multiply, and before long, it is no longer clear just what the truth is.
