As You Like It (Full Frame)

Elisabeth Bergner stars as Rosalind, the daughter of an exiled Duke, who falls in love with Orlando (Laurence Olivier), the son of one of her father's courtiers. When Orlando continues to ignore her, Rosalind decides the best way to be at his side is by disguising herself as a boy. Her deception works too well as Orlando would rather be in the boy's company than hers. How Rosalind works out her predicament is part of the fun in this early sound film adaptation of Shakespeare's classic play. Laurence Olivier certainly needs no introduction to audiences of today, especially as a masterful Shakespearean actor and director. But the name of the great Elisabeth Bergner will probably mean little to those who grew up after she retired from both stage and screen in the mid-1960s. At the time this film version of "As You Like It" was made in England in 1936, however, it was Bergner who was the internationally famous star, with Olivier still just as a "promising" young actor. Bergner, in fact, had been an Academy Award nominee as Best Actress the year before she filmed "As You Like It" - for the now-forgotten British-made romantic drama "Escape Me Never" (she lost to Bette Davis in "Dangerous".).
