In a complex tale of loneliness, a troubled writer of diminutive size struggles with the enormous issues of love, lust and morality. Lucien L'hotte (Jean-Yves Thual, "Asterix" and "Obelix Against Caesar") works at a law firm, composing sexually incriminating letters for use as false evidence in divorce cases. Set up near his office is the Urbino Circus, where a pure-hearted trapeze artist, Isis, strikes up a friendship with the outcast Lucien. When an aging opera star, the Countess Paola Bendoni (Anita Ekberg, "La Dolce Vita") seeks his services, Lucien's life takes a dramatic turn. He visits Paola to read his poison pen letter and uncharacteristically stages a daring and successful seduction. But unbridled passion turns to deadly rage when Paola eventually rejects Lucien and returns to her husband. Spiraling out of control, Lucien teeters on an emotional tightrope between lunacy and redemption. Resigning from his degrading job, he re-unites with Isis and joins the Urbino Circus. As the Red Dwarf, Lucien finds his niche, but still battles his inner demons, as the circus' newest sensation.
