One of the most controversial stories of the 1960s becomes explosively relevant in the light of today's headlines. Sherri (Sissy Spacek) is a hardworking wife to her husband, Bob (Aidan Quinn), mother to her four children, and regional presenter of "The Romper Room" children's TV show. Pregnant with their fifth child, Sherri discovers that the thalidomide she has taken can cause severe birth defects in children. Sherri and Bob arrange for an abortion, but when the press finds out, their private matter becomes a public affair. Sherri is fired from her job, and Bob is let go from his position as a high school teacher.
