Countdown: The Sky

Double Feature contains "Countdown: The Sky's On Fire" and "The Great Los Angeles Earthquake" "Countdown: The Sky's On Fire" - L.A. is under siege - hordes of deadly insects are engulfing the city, whales are dying in alarming numbers, corpses are bursting into flames, animals are going insane - but no one wants to listen to the one man who holds the key to the future, Dr. Evan Thorne (John Corbett), a dedicated, renegade scientist. Thorne's unorthodox methods and gloomy forecasts about the impending threat of ozone depletion have won him few allies. Now, when every second counts, he has to convince his ex-wife (Josie Bissett), his colleague (Jo Anderson), and a world-weary, cynical reporter (Bradley Whitford) that he is not crazy. After that: he has to think about saving the world. Calamities galore, excellent effects, and unbounded action, make this film a bracing thrill ride from start to finish. "The Great Los Angeles Earthquake" - After a series of small tremors in Los Angeles, Dr. Clare Winslow (Joanna Kerns), a highly regarded seismologist, is convinced by her findings that a catastrophic earthquake - "The Big One" - will hit within days and tear the region apart. As Clare struggles with the decision of whether or not to divulge the potentially devastating news, an overzealous reporter (Richard Masur) releases the story despite the politicians desperate attempts to cover it up. Amidst a fury of mass hysteria, misinformation and confusion, "The Big One" hits. This film is a remarkably shattering and realistic look at the death, destruction and fear that befalls a city under siege by Mother Nature as well as the indomitable strength of the human spirit to survive.
