Based on a true story, "Night Crossing" chronicles the perils of two East German families - the Strelzyks and the Wetzels - as they attempt to cross over the Berlin Wall and escape to the freedom of the West. Peter Strelzyk and Gunter Wetzel secretly build a hot-air balloon to travel over the wall. But Gunter's wife convinces her husband to abandon the project, and only the Strelzyks are aboard when the balloon crash lands just short of the Western border. As the police rapidly close in, the Strelzyks and Wetzels reunite, making one final attempt to fly to freedom.
